Privacy Policy & POPIA Privacy Notice

How Detour Logistics Solutions collects, uses, stores and protects personal information, in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA).

Last updated: Draft, pending DLS approval

Draft notice: not yet approved

This page is baseline groundwork, not a finished policy. It has been drafted from Detour Logistics Solutions's known business facts and general South African legal requirements, but it has not been reviewed or approved by Detour Logistics Solutions, and it has not been checked by a qualified South African legal practitioner. It is not legal advice. Do not rely on it as final until that review is complete.

Who we are

Detour Logistics Solutions is a South African logistics business with its head office at Unit 2, Block C, Freeway Park, 24 Pomona Road, Pomona, Kempton Park, 1619, South Africa. For personal information processed through this website and through our logistics operations, Detour Logistics Solutions is the "responsible party" as that term is used in POPIA.

Information Officer

POPIA requires every responsible party to appoint an Information Officer, registered with the Information Regulator, who takes accountability for compliance and handles requests about personal information. [Placeholder. DLS to confirm: the name and direct contact details of the appointed Information Officer, and confirmation that the appointment is registered with the Information Regulator.] Until that is confirmed, general enquiries about this notice can be sent to sales@d-l-s.co.za.

Information we collect

This website does not send any form to its own server, and it does not collect personal information through an online submission. The contact page lists the sales email, the office number and the branch addresses; the email link opens your own email app, and this website stores and sends nothing. When you contact us by email or telephone using the links this site provides, that opens your own email or phone application. The details you choose to share (such as your name, company, contact details and the nature of your enquiry) go directly to us that way: not through this website's server.

Separately, once a logistics engagement is underway (a relationship formed off this website), we process delivery-related information in the course of providing the service, including consignee names, delivery addresses, and signatures or acknowledgements captured on Proofs of Delivery and Goods Received Vouchers.

Standard technical information (such as IP address, browser type and pages visited) may be logged automatically by our website hosting and content-delivery infrastructure, as is normal for any website. [Placeholder: DLS to confirm whether the specific hosting/CDN provider(s) should be named here.] This website does not use analytics, advertising or tracking cookies. See the Cookie Policy for the detail.

How we use personal information

To respond to enquiries, quote and provide logistics services, manage deliveries and documentation, invoice and reconcile accounts, meet legal and regulatory obligations, and improve our service. We use personal information only for the purposes it was collected for, or a purpose compatible with it.

Lawful basis for processing

POPIA requires processing to rest on one of several lawful grounds: performing or concluding a contract to which you are a party, complying with a legal obligation, protecting your legitimate interests, pursuing our legitimate interests (or those of a third party) in a way that is balanced against your rights, or your consent. Which ground applies depends on the specific activity: arranging a delivery, for example, relies on performing the contract with our client, while responding to a general enquiry typically relies on our legitimate interest in dealing with it.

Special personal information and children

This website is directed at businesses. We do not knowingly collect "special personal information" (such as health, race, religious belief, trade union membership or criminal history) or the personal information of children through it, as those terms are defined in POPIA. Where delivery documentation incidentally includes a signatory's name, it is processed only to confirm that delivery.

Sharing personal information

We may share personal information with sub-contracted transport operators, receiving retailers and Distribution Centres, and service providers who process information on our behalf (POPIA calls these "operators"). [Placeholder: DLS to confirm and list the specific operators / service providers, if this notice should name them individually.] Operators are required to process information only on our instruction and to keep it confidential and secure. We may also disclose information where required by law or by a competent authority. We do not sell personal information.

Retention and security

Personal information is kept only for as long as necessary for the purpose it was collected, or for as long as the law requires (for example, tax, financial and consumer-protection record-keeping obligations). [Placeholder: DLS to confirm specific retention periods for enquiry records, POD / GRV documentation and financial records, so an exact timeframe can replace this general principle.]

We apply reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect personal information against loss, unauthorised access, interference and misuse. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Your rights under POPIA

Subject to POPIA, you may ask us to confirm whether we hold personal information about you and request access to it; ask us to correct or delete personal information that is inaccurate, irrelevant, excessive, out of date, incomplete, misleading or unlawfully obtained; object to the processing of your personal information on reasonable grounds, including for direct marketing; and withdraw consent where processing is based on consent. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at sales@d-l-s.co.za.

If you believe we have not dealt with your personal information in line with POPIA, you may complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa: email POPIAComplaints@inforegulator.org.za, physical address Woodmead North Office Park, 54 Maxwell Drive, Woodmead, Johannesburg, 2191, website inforegulator.org.za (opens in a new tab). These are the Regulator's own published contact details, not Detour Logistics Solutions's. Please confirm them against the Regulator's site before publishing, as they can change.

Direct marketing

We do not currently send electronic direct marketing communications. If that changes, we will only do so within the consent and opt-out requirements of section 69 of POPIA and the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act, 2002 (ECTA).

Cross-border transfers

Where deliveries extend into Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho or Eswatini, limited delivery-related information may be transferred across borders to complete the delivery and meet customs or regulatory requirements. POPIA places conditions on transferring personal information outside South Africa. [Placeholder: DLS to confirm the specific safeguard relied on for any transfer beyond what is strictly necessary to complete the delivery itself.]
